Personal Prayer and Devotion

The Bible

The Episcopal Church takes reading the Bible seriously. Approximately 70% of The Book of Common Prayer comes directly from the Bible — and Episcopalians read more Holy Scripture in Sunday worship than almost any other denomination in Christianity.

The Bible is our foundation, understood through tradition and reason, containing all things necessary for salvation. Our worship is filled with Scripture from beginning to end.

The Lectionary: scripture readings for our worship

In the Episcopal Church, we follow a three-year cycle of readings for our Sunday worship, and celebrate many saints and other days of observance during the year. Called "The Revised Common Lectionary," it is shared by several denominations for worship. Click here to view.

On Sunday, we read four passages from holy scriptures:

  • The Old Testament;

  • The Psalm;

  • The New Testament or one of the Epistles;

  • The Gospel
