August 2024 Sermon Series

Grounded in our approach of intellectual honesty, we are reminded that the Biblical texts were produced in a particular time, place, and context. In the case of the Bible, that context is always very different from ours as readers. The Gospel of Mark, which is the earliest of the Gospel narratives, is grounded in the kingdom teaching of Jesus while living under the brutality of the Roman empire. 

During this time of tension and division, created by those who wish to build kingdoms and empires of power and might, it is important for us to remember how the early Christians understood Jesus to be the herald of an alternative kind of kingdom. 

During the next four weeks, we will pick up where we left off in the spring to continue our journey through the Gospel of Mark.
